From Transmission to Collaborative Learning: Best Evidence in Continuing Professional Development

This interactive symposium explores the characteristics of effective collaborative CPD for teachers through modeling the use of evidence and research. The work developed from a systematic review of the impact of CPD on teaching and on student learning coordinated by CUREE within the framework provided by the Evidence for Policy and Practice Information (EPPI) Centre at the University of London.

Leading Continuing Professional Devlopment in School Networks: Adding Value, Securing Impact

The Leading CPD in School Networks leaflet has been produced as part of the NCSL Network Research series. The leaflet is the final product from a collaborative enquiry that took place during 2005, involving all the national agencies and a range of key stakeholders with an active interest in both networks and continuing professional development.

The leaflet draws together and reflects the evidence about the leadership of in networks, exploring the perspectives of the national agencies in a matrix of current leadership programmes. Identifying some of the core challenges and underpinning issues through evidence from three systematic reviews of research, interviews, focus groups and a policy makers seminar. The leaflet identifies some of the key characteristics of effective CPD in networks such as the importance of collaborative CPD , peer support, use of experts and use of professional dialogue.

The beauty of this pack…and the others presumably in the series…is that not only does it have useful content for a school-based mentor or coach with regard to their own CPD , it equips the teacher to organise workshops relating to CPD for other colleagues.

The pack will provide the CPD coordinator with high-quality up-to-date materials in one place. The toolkit will enable them to construct a development programme tailored to the needs of their own school.

This is an outstanding resource.I like the flexibility of being able to choose activities not only by type but also by the estimated time that it would take to undertake them.

The CD Rom is a user friendly planning tool with well-prepared resources to use with staff. The exercises are varied and imaginative.

The pack will provide the CPD coordinator with high-quality up-to-date materials in one place. The toolkit will enable them to construct a development programme tailored to the needs of their own school.

Congratulations to CUREE for having the insight, courage, and determination to publish such an interesting and versatile resource. I'm sure that these packs will earn their keep in any resource bank for CPD coordinators offering coaching in schools.

As CPD leader the pack is extremely useful because it allows me to draw links and ideas for staff, but also to have in mind a larger picture with reference to the School Development Plan.

The pack is very attractively packaged and layout is pleasing on the eye

Very comprehensive; all the resources are ready to use. PowerPoint particularly useful and the activities have clear objectives/reasoning which can be shared with colleagues

Planning the CPD for the school year is made much easier with a pack such as this –different aspects can be used at different times – liked the interactive planning tool.

‘Joining Up’ magazine was easy to read and sparked interest and the index on the back was very useful; far easier than always having to refer to the CD.

Encouraging teachers nationwide to discuss and engage with the Research of the Month (RoM) series

CUREE worked alongside the General Teaching Council’s Engage network to run two events to encourage teachers nationwide to discuss and engage with the Research of the Month (RoM) series. The teachers used the evidence from RoM as a starting point for a completing a stage one Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) presentation.
