Ipswich Mentor Development and Training Programme

Introduction

Education leaders in Suffolk told the Ipswich Opportunity Area (IOA) they struggle to recruit and retain high quality staff, and we know there’s been a national spike in the numbers leaving the profession within their third to fifth year. So, in the light of the research behind the benefits and importance of high-quality mentoring, one commitment for the Ipswich Opportunity Area (IOA) is for all NQTs (and RQTs) to have the support of a fully trained mentor available to them in the early years of their teaching career.

CUREE, who developed the National Framework for Mentoring and Coaching, created this Mentor Development and Training Programme to provide the opportunity for up to 150 practitioners across Ipswich to advance their skills, knowledge and confidence in mentoring, and to be part of a movement providing strong local support for all NQTs in Ipswich.

All maintained nurseries, schools (including special schools and PRUs), and colleges within the Ipswich Opportunity Area will be contacted for details of the colleagues they are nominating to be part of this programme. Together, these new mentors will become a major influence in achieving the aims of the IOA to reduce the number of professionals leaving the teaching profession in Ipswich and strengthen school improvement capacity.
