Hattie’s concept of visible teaching and learning
What did the study find out?
Hattie found that the influences that had the most impact on student achievement were the teacher and the teaching and learning approaches. He proposed a model of ‘visible teaching and visible learning’ which identified the most significant factors of the effective approaches. Visible teaching involves:
How do you know you are making a difference?
As next year's budgets are known there is inevitably a question as to whether strategies and interventions planned are effective and if so are they value for money? Evaluating the impact of CPD is a particular challenge as so many factors influence whether the professional learning undertaken results in changes through to pupil level. Whilst many schools know the importance of evaluation, all to often it is not planned for from the beginning and when it does actually happen the process involves capturing briefly staff reactions and an immediate short term reflection on their learning.
ICSEI 24th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement
Philippa delivered a well-received keynote at the 24th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement in Cyprus in January. This annual event provides an opportunity for researchers, policy-makers and teachers from all over the world to come together and share a common commitment to develop more efficient and equitable education. Philippa shared CUREE’s research work on practitioner engagement in and/or with research. Based on the research, her speech explored the links between practitioner research engagement and positive student outcomes and raised a number of implications for policy and practice in education. Through the event, CUREE’s work was made widely known to delegates from across the globe and we had good opportunities to network, make connections for future research and share approaches with others pursuing similar work.
Mentoring and Coaching
The evidence is solid – mentoring and coaching is the single most effective CPD approach for sustained improvement for students.
But the effectiveness of mentoring and coaching depends on a range of principles and skills being developed and strategically applied across the school supported by practical tools and resources. This needn’t be as challenging as it sounds. With tools targeted to meet a range of need you can ensure colleagues understand the underpinning rationale - so they can adapt to different needs and contexts.
Anchor your Strategic Plan in the evidence
Pressures in school budgets mean that more than ever you need to have evidence that the plans you make in your Strategic Plan are likely to be effective. We can help you target funds to maximise their impact on pupil outcomes.
CUREE’s in-house expertise and extensive evidence database can help you identify approaches that are likely to be effective for pupils at scale.
