Response to Intervention: Strategies for Needs-Based Writing Development

CUREE are delighted to announce that we have been funded by EEF to develop a version of our Response to Intervention programme to address learning gaps in writing.

Our aim is to equip colleagues in schools with the skills and tools to conduct close case analysis of pupil and class-level writing development needs. We will provide CPD to practitioners and leaders to enable them to build targeted, evidence-rich responses to those needs. This will support schools to develop their skills, confidence and collaborative environments in order to develop pupils’ writing for the long term.

We are looking for 12 schools to deliver the programme and provide feedback for future development. All enrolled schools will receive a £2,000 payment for their participation in research. The programme is taking place from January 2025 to May 2025 and includes:

  • 3 face-to-face CPD sessions with peers from other participating schools. The launch session will be a full day, followed by two half-day sessions spaced across the project,
  • Teachers and leaders will be asked to conduct analysis of the writing needs of their learners, engage with a menu of interventions to target those needs, deliver those interventions, and observe and reflect on what changes would improve their effectiveness.
  • Prior to sessions, colleagues will be asked to collect some evidence about writing skills and/or confidence gaps which exist in their classrooms for the most vulnerable pupils, in order to base their close-case analysis on rich data.
  • During delivery, participating teachers/practitioners and senior leaders will be required to take part in a small number of feedback activities (e.g. surveys and group discussions) to help us understand your experiences of implementing the programme
  • A full privacy notice and other relevant data protection information will be made available for you to review prior to signing a memorandum of understanding

We will provide participants with highly experienced CPD facilitation and a set of tools and resources to help embed the principles and approaches of RtI in your practice on a sustainable basis. This will be introduced at the launch session, and then reinforced at follow-up sessions, which will also enable colleagues to identify progress they are making and celebrate successes by the end of the programme.

The tools and resources you will receive will include:

  • A close case analysis framework, and guidance for how to complete it
  • A set of formative assessment tools to observe pupil progress
  • A menu of micro-interventions and guidance regarding how to select and implement themPlease register your interest in the programme by 20th December by contacting bart.crisp@curee.co.uk, philippa.cordingley@curee.co.uk, or milenapoli@libero.it.
