Her presentation set out the evidence underpinning effective mentoring. She described the characteristics of good mentoring and supported this with examples through videos and activities.

This report shows an anonymised case study comprised of interviews from four Teach First teachers. Two beginning their training and two in leadership positions.

Using a supportive mentoring to aid important action research

Aim: The primary aim of this project was to provide a supportive, pro-active and practical mentoring partnership in which individual teachers could conduct their independent action research. The results were actually far more significant than the original aim suggested and extended beyond the boundaries of the action research itself. Research mentoring led to tangible and long-term benefits both for our personal development and our professional development as teachers.

Strategies for improving boys' academic performance

Aim: To identify strategies which teachers can use to improve the performance of boys and their attitude to learning. In particular to examine the effectiveness of mentoring, as a strategy for improving boys academic performance. Also to ascertain which teaching methodologies are most likely to engage boys in their own learning.

How mentoring can raise standards of achievement

Aim: To increase the level of achievement among Year 7 and Year 12 pupils in a girls comprehensive school through regular mentoring interviews between pupils and teachers.

Setting targets as a way of improving teaching

Aim: To investigate the setting of targets as a means of improving the effectiveness of teachers.

Identifying the attributes of effective Initial Teacher Training (ITT) mentors

Aim: To identify the attributes, qualities and behaviours of highly effective mentors, to identify training implications for mentors and to compare a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) based course with a university based course (as part of a Sports College consortium project).

Mentoring GCSE students

Aim: To explore how the findings from research into the use of mentoring to support year 11 C/D borderline students prior to their GCSE examinations have led to more advanced models of mentoring being introduced to the college.

Improving teaching and learning with mentorship

Aim: To increase the record of achievement among Year 7 and Year 12 pupils in a girls comprehensive school through regular mentoring interviews between pupils and teachers.
