A presentation to the LearningFirst event at Sheffield, Hallam University on 5th November 2016. Governors (and trustees) are now firmly ensconsed in the leadership accountability system which is now a joint enterprise with heads and other senior leaders. This short presentation outlined the contradictory pressures on governors, particularly about their level of engagement with pupil performance, and what they needed to exercise their role effectively. The presentation went on to outline how National Leaders of Governance can support governing bodies in this.

The social development of children in special schools

Aim: To investigate the social development of children with severe learning difficulties in special schools as compared with those in mainstream schools.

Homework and Study Support in Year 7

Aim: To identify ways in which teachers can enhance student learning through homework, by examining homework, perceptions of it in Year 7, and support systems both in school and at home.

Whole staff approaches to extended writing classes at Key Stage 3 - a case study in using and doing research

Aim: To use evidence from a long-standing whole school initiative on reading coaching and the wider body of research into reading coaching, to design and assess intensive cross-curricular interventions that would generate measureable gains in extended writing skills at Key Stage 3, that could be sustained into GCSE.
